Inspired by the wave action of the Pacific Ocean hitting the shoreline and the natural beauty of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in Carmel, and by an accident of color and texture that appeared on my palette pictured below while working on another cold wax medium piece.
I noticed how the layers of the wax on my palette made a pattern that to me looked like the turbulent waters of the Pacific. Expanding on the idea, I thought of introducing a closer look at a wave as it hits the shoreline. The wave and rocks are built by several layers of subtle color and textures. Below is a picture of the piece after the first few layers.
The final piece entitled “The Wave” is composed of many layers of oil paint mixed with cold wax medium. The piece is finished with galkyd added to wax medium to produce a sheen on the finished piece.
The cold wax medium mixes with oil colors, powdered pigments, and other materials that allows for freedom of style and technique while helping me achieve brilliance, luminosity and a rich textural surface.
